A detailed hole-by-hole guide to Punta Espada Golf Course — including the legendary ocean holes, Fairway 5 (where Villa Espada sits), and tips for playing each one.
Villa Espada Cap Cana — 8-bedroom luxury estate on Fairway 5, Punta Espada. Private chef, butler, member golf rates, two golf carts, Cap Cana Waterpark access. Check availability →
Cap Cana continues to cement its position as the Caribbean's finest luxury resort destination. With the combination of Punta Espada's #1-rated golf, Juanillo Beach, the new Cap Cana Waterpark, the St. Regis, and a fully gated 24-hour security environment, there is simply no comparable destination in the region.
For groups staying at Villa Espada, every experience described in this guide is accessible — typically within 10–15 minutes by golf cart. Your personal butler arranges all bookings, transportation, and logistics so your group can focus entirely on enjoying paradise.
Unlike any hotel or resort, Villa Espada gives your group complete privacy and flexibility. Your private chef adapts to every preference. Your butler handles every reservation. Two six-person golf carts give your group complete mobility across Cap Cana's 30,000 acres. The 8-bedroom estate accommodates up to 22 guests under one roof — no splitting into separate hotel rooms, no crowded pool areas.
Punta Espada is an 18-hole Jack Nicklaus Signature layout stretching to 7,116 yards from the championship tees (par 72). Opened in 2006, it was designed specifically to maximize the Caribbean coastline — eight holes play along or directly over the Atlantic Ocean. The course sits entirely within the gated Cap Cana development, 15 minutes from Punta Cana International Airport. Greens fees for non-members run approximately $350–$450 per round including cart; guests of Villa Espada play at exclusive member rates arranged through the villa's personal butler.
Hole 5 is the most unique tee shot on the course for one reason: Villa Espada sits directly on this fairway, and guests staying at the estate often watch (or join) groups teeing off from their own backyard. Playing at approximately 385 yards from the white tees, the hole doglegs gently right around a waste bunker complex. The approach requires carrying a bunker short-right of the green, which tilts away from the player. Club up on the approach — the ocean breeze funneling in from the right plays tricks with distance perception. This is the hole where Villa Espada guests have the ultimate insider vantage point.
Arguably the most photographed hole at Punta Espada. This 195-yard par 3 plays directly over a rocky Atlantic cove to a green perched above the surf. The tee box sits elevated, giving players a panoramic view of the Caribbean coastline. At tournament conditions (back tees: 220+ yards), the prevailing left-to-right wind makes club selection agonizing. The right half of the green slopes toward the ocean — miss right and you are making a long walk to a drop zone. Play the middle of the green, accept the two-putt, and enjoy the view.
At 546 yards from the whites, Hole 8 is a reachable par 5 that follows the coastline. The tee shot is generous, but the second shot requires a decision: lay back short of the waste bunker crossing the fairway at 260 yards, or challenge it and set up a short iron into the green. The green itself is wide and relatively flat by Punta Espada standards, making par 5 birdies achievable for mid-handicappers. This hole has produced more Nicklaus Champions Tour birdies than any other on the back nine.
The stretch from 11–14 plays along the highest elevation on the property, with ocean views in every direction. Hole 13 (par 4, ~415 yards) is the most demanding of this run: the tee shot must carry a forced carry over a ravine, and the approach is into a shallow green guarded by deep bunkers front and left. The green here is the fastest on the course — approach shots that land past the hole leave a near-impossible downhill slider. Play safe to the fat of the green and take your par.
Nicklaus calls Hole 16 the emotional center of the closing stretch. Playing 165–210 yards depending on the pin, the tee shot must carry a saltwater lagoon to an island-style green ringed by bunkers. Wind direction shifts dramatically here as the hole is exposed on three sides. Read the flag carefully before selecting your club — many first-time visitors underclub by two full clubs due to the visual deception of playing over water. Once on the green, the subtle left-to-right break is almost invisible from address but becomes obvious on a second look from behind the cup.
Tee time windows: The best light and coolest temperatures arrive between 7:00–9:00 AM. By midday in peak season (December–April), temperature and wind pick up significantly. Late afternoon rounds (starting 3:30 PM) catch the golden-hour light on the ocean holes but risk not finishing before dark.
Caddies vs. GPS carts: Punta Espada provides both GPS-equipped carts and local caddies. First-time visitors benefit enormously from a caddie for at least the front nine — local knowledge on the ocean holes (especially 7, 8, and 13) is worth several strokes. Tip caddies $50–$80 USD for an 18-hole round.
Course dress code: Collared shirts required. No denim. Soft spikes only on the greens. The pro shop rents equipment (Taylor Made drivers, Callaway irons) at competitive rates — useful if traveling without clubs.
Member rates via Villa Espada: Non-member green fees range from $350–$450 per round. Guests of Villa Espada access the course at significantly reduced member rates — this benefit alone represents meaningful savings over a week-long golf trip. Your personal butler books and manages all tee times, eliminating the friction of coordinating directly with the club.
There is no better base for experiencing Punta Espada than Villa Espada itself — an 8-bedroom luxury estate positioned directly on Fairway 5. Your morning routine becomes watching the early groups navigate the approach you will be playing yourself within the hour. Two 6-person golf carts are included with every stay, meaning the first tee is literally a 3-minute ride from your breakfast table. The butler has your tee time confirmed before you finish your coffee.
