Greens: Punta Espada maintains its Bermuda greens at consistent stimpmeter readings of 10–11 in peak season. The surfaces are fast by Caribbean standards and hold their line well. Expect subtle slope and occasional grain effect on seaside holes. In low season (May–October), greens are fully maintained and conditions remain excellent despite lighter visitor traffic.
Fairways & rough: Fairways are wide by design — Nicklaus was intentional about giving average golfers memorable shots without punishing them off the tee. The rough is kept at a medium height that is penal but not brutal. Bermuda rough tends to grab the club at certain angles; open-faced recovery shots work better than trying to square the clubface through it.
Bunkers: The waste bunkers that bisect several fairways (particularly Holes 5, 8, and 14) are raked daily and play fairly. Greenside bunkers are deeper and more punishing — the sand is coarser than tour-standard, which requires a slightly more aggressive swing to escape cleanly.
Pace of play: Well-managed. Tee times are spaced generously and the course rarely backs up, even at peak hour. An 18-hole round averages 4 hours 15 minutes, occasionally faster in smaller groups. The GPS carts display yardages accurately and reduce decision-time on approaches.
The clubhouse is contemporary and well-appointed — private locker rooms, a full-service bar and restaurant (excellent breakfast and post-round lunch), and a covered patio overlooking the 18th green. The pro shop is well stocked with equipment, apparel, and accessories at resort-level pricing. Rental sets (TaylorMade and Callaway) are in good condition and available on short notice.
Staff service is consistently ranked as a standout. Bag handling from arrival through bag drop to cart loading is seamless. Starter and marshal service is professional and low-pressure. The beverage cart services all ocean-facing holes on a regular rotation. Overall, the experience feels private-club caliber despite operating as a semi-private resort course.
