The Dominican Republic has quietly become the Caribbean's premier golf destination — home to more world-class courses than any other island nation. Here's every course worth playing, ranked by quality, and how to access them all from a single villa.
Villa Espada sits directly on Fairway 5 of Punta Espada — the #1 course on this list. Guests play at member rates, have access to 81 holes within 15 minutes, and enjoy a personal butler who arranges every tee time. Check availability →
With over 25 courses designed by the biggest names in golf architecture — Jack Nicklaus, Tom Fazio, Pete Dye, P.B. Dye — the Dominican Republic offers more championship-caliber golf per square mile than anywhere else in the Caribbean. The climate is playable 365 days a year, green fees are generally lower than comparable courses in the United States, and the hospitality infrastructure (private villas, resorts, private chefs, chauffeurs) makes organizing a golf trip remarkably easy.
The best courses are concentrated in three areas: Cap Cana (Punta Espada and Las Iguanas), Puntacana Resort (Corales and La Cana), and Casa de Campo (Teeth of the Dog, Dye Fore, and The Links). All three regions are on the eastern coast, making multi-course trips practical from a single base.
Designer: Jack Nicklaus · Holes: 18 · Par: 72 · Yardage: 7,152 · Ocean Holes: 9
Punta Espada at Cap Cana is the undisputed king of Caribbean golf. Designed by Jack Nicklaus at the peak of his design career, the course features nine holes directly on the Atlantic Ocean — the finest consecutive stretch of seaside holes in the region. GolfWeek has ranked it #1 in the Caribbean and Mexico multiple times, Golf Digest placed it in the Top 100 Courses Outside the United States within seven months of opening, and it hosted the PGA Champions Tour Cap Cana Championship.
The par-3 13th hole — a full carry over the ocean to a green perched on a rocky headland — is the most photographed hole in Caribbean golf. The entire back nine is an experience that rivals any oceanside stretch in the world, including Pebble Beach's coastline run.
Access from Villa Espada: On property. Villa Espada sits directly on Fairway 5. Walk to the first tee. Member rates for all guests. Full Punta Espada guide →
Designer: Pete Dye · Holes: 18 · Par: 72 · Yardage: 6,957 · Ocean Holes: 7
Teeth of the Dog at Casa de Campo is the course that put Dominican Republic golf on the map. Opened in 1971, Pete Dye's masterpiece was the first world-class golf course built in the Caribbean and remains one of the greatest courses in the world. Seven holes play along the rocky Caribbean coast, with crashing waves, coral outcroppings, and the kind of raw natural beauty that no modern course can replicate.
The name comes from the jagged coral limestone formations — "dientes del perro" — that line the shore and frame many of the coastal holes. Dye worked with local Dominican laborers who carved the course from raw coral using hand tools, creating a connection to the landscape that feels organic rather than manufactured.
Access from Villa Espada: Day trip by private chauffeur (~1 hour each way). Your butler arranges tee times and can book lunch at Casa de Campo. Full Teeth of the Dog guide →
Designer: Jack Nicklaus · Holes: 18 · Ocean Holes: 3 · Lakes: 10
Las Iguanas is the most exciting new golf course in the Caribbean. The second Jack Nicklaus Signature course at Cap Cana, built with a $26 million investment, offers a completely different experience from its neighbor Punta Espada. Where Punta Espada is cliff-edge ocean drama, Las Iguanas winds through open parkland, natural wetlands, caves, indigenous vegetation, and a protected nature preserve — with three dramatic oceanside holes (12 through 14) as the centerpiece.
Ten inland lakes create strategic risk-reward decisions on virtually every hole. The resident green iguanas that gave the course its name are regular spectators. Together with Punta Espada, Las Iguanas gives Cap Cana 36 holes of Nicklaus genius — more than any other resort community in the Caribbean.
Access from Villa Espada: 3 minutes by golf cart. Access included for villa guests. Full Las Iguanas guide →
Designer: Tom Fazio · Holes: 18 · Par: 72 · Yardage: 7,670 · Ocean Holes: 6
Corales at Puntacana Resort & Club is where the PGA Tour comes to the Caribbean. Host of the Corales Puntacana Championship since 2018 — the first PGA Tour event in Dominican Republic history — Tom Fazio's design stretches along limestone cliffs, coral reefs, inland lakes, and coralina quarries. The Devil's Elbow finishing stretch (holes 16–18) is one of the most feared closes in professional golf, culminating in the 18th hole's forced carry over the cliff-lined Bay of Corales.
Access from Villa Espada: ~15 minutes by private chauffeur. Butler arranges tee times. Full Corales guide →
Designer: P.B. Dye · Holes: 27 · Ocean-View Holes: 14 · Nines: Tortuga, Arrecife, Hacienda
La Cana at Puntacana Resort & Club offers something no other course in the Caribbean can match: 27 holes across three distinct nines, each with its own character. The Arrecife nine is the standout — featuring an island-green par 3 inspired by TPC Sawgrass and a two-hole oceanside finish that Golf Magazine compared to Pebble Beach. The magazine named La Cana the #1 course in the Caribbean. La Cana was also the first Caribbean course to use paspalum grass, creating firm, fast conditions year-round.
Access from Villa Espada: ~15 minutes by private chauffeur (same trip as Corales). Full La Cana guide →
Designer: Pete Dye · Holes: 27 · Elevation: 300 feet above the Chavón River
Pete Dye's second masterpiece at Casa de Campo is a 27-hole complex perched atop cliffs 300 feet above the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea. The views alone are worth the trip. The Marina nine offers seven holes with Caribbean panoramas, while the Chavón and Lagos nines wind along the dramatic river gorge. The combination of elevation, wind, and visual intimidation makes Dye Fore one of the most thrilling — and challenging — golf experiences in the region.
Access from Villa Espada: Day trip to Casa de Campo by private chauffeur (~1 hour). Pair with Teeth of the Dog for a two-round day. Full Dye Fore guide →
Designer: Pete Dye · Holes: 18 · Par: 71 · Style: Inland Links
The third course at Casa de Campo is often overlooked, but The Links is a Pete Dye design worth playing. Built in an inland links style with rolling terrain, pot bunkers, and firm fairways, it provides a contrast to the oceanside drama of Teeth of the Dog and the clifftop elevation of Dye Fore. It's the most affordable of the three Casa de Campo courses and a good option for a second round on a day trip.
The optimal base: Cap Cana puts you closest to the highest concentration of elite courses. With Punta Espada and Las Iguanas on-site and Corales and La Cana just 15 minutes away, you have 81 holes of world-class golf within a short radius. Casa de Campo courses are a scenic one-hour drive for day trips.
How many rounds to plan: For a week-long golf trip, plan five to six rounds. A typical itinerary: Day 1 — Punta Espada, Day 2 — Las Iguanas morning + pool afternoon, Day 3 — Corales, Day 4 — La Cana morning + beach afternoon, Day 5 — Teeth of the Dog day trip, Day 6 — Punta Espada farewell round. This covers the top courses without burnout.
Best months: December through April for the driest conditions. May–June and November for shoulder-season value. July through October for the lowest rates — courses are playable year-round despite brief afternoon showers.
Green fees: Vary by course and season. Villa Espada guests receive member rates at Punta Espada — a significant saving over standard visitor pricing, which can exceed $400 per round at the top courses. Your butler arranges all bookings and knows the best rates for every course on this list.
